The Importance of Chinese

In Singapore, the Chinese language occupies a position of prominence, despite the fact that Malay is our national language, and we, as a country, primarily speak English. This is largely because our little nation has an ethnic Chinese majority. 74.2%, to be exact, if we’re going by 2013 figures. As such, an ability to converse fluently in the language is highly advantageous. Even our local pidgin, Singlish, is heavily influenced by the Chinese style of speech, borrowing vocabulary and even grammatical rules from the language (“Why you so bo liao?”)

Why is Chinese tuition necessary?

In schools especially, the emphasis on Chinese has led many parents to seek private tutors for their children. From the age of 7, students must undertake Mother Tongue examinations 4 times a year (of which Chinese is the most common one) until their GCE ‘O’ Levels at 16. Since the Chinese subject carries the same weight as English, Math and the Sciences, it is imperative that students do well. In order to achieve good overall grades, one cannot afford to be negligent in the Chinese subject, and simply let it fall to the wayside. Students weak in Chinese have thus found it useful to attend private Chinese tuition classes. In classes like these, tutors often teach one-to-one or in small groups, thereby increasing the teacher to student ratio. Students thus receive more attention from their Chinese tuition teachers, and generally feel less inhibited when it comes to asking questions or clarifying doubts. Especially for language subjects, it is important to keep at it constantly, and to build up a strong foundation. Private tutors are, as such, more conducive for language learning, because they can cater the lesson to suit each child’s individual problems and attend to weak areas as soon as they crop up.

Even the government thinks so! Over the years, the authorities have initiated and enthusiastically supported various programmes to promote the use of Chinese. The ‘Speak Mandarin’ campaign, for example, has a constant feature on the local scene for the last 36 years, and has been credited with helping to build a largely bilingual Singapore.

In recent years, Chinese has become more and more important. With the rise of China as a major economic power, business transactions are increasingly conducted in Mandarin. What’s more, it is now the language with the highest number of native speakers. 15% of the world’s population, in fact. Being able to speak Chinese is thus hugely advantageous, especially since employers are making it a point to hire Chinese-speakers. Plus, given the rising number of Chinese migrants from mainland China, there is a rising number of Chinese-speakers within Singapore itself! Many of which work in customer service positions like waiters and bus drivers. Because of this, it’s become necessary to understand even a little bit of Chinese for everyday purposes like grocery shopping, or ordering food at a restaurant.

Being able to speak our Mother Tongue is not only an academic or business concern for us Singaporeans. It is also a means through which we can keep in touch with our roots. It is not possible for us to translate everything into English; certain figures of speech and the names of traditional foods, activities and rituals are sure to be lost in the translation.

Epigami can find the right Chinese tutor for you!

It is therefore of the utmost importance to do well in our Mother Tongue subjects. Be it Malay, Chinese, Hindi, Tamil, Punjabi and so on. That’s why no time should be wasted in hiring a Chinese tutor. At Epigami, we conduct routine checks and in-depth interviews to ensure that you’re getting a highly quality Chinese tuition to ensure your child’s academic progress. Just give our specialised tuition advisers a call or register on our website, and we’ll start the search right away!
